
Martin Palmeri
Martin Palmeri, born in Buenos Aires in 1965, is a composer, pianist, choirmaster and orchestra conductor. He studied composition with Daniel Montes, Marcelo Chevalier, Rodolfo Mederos, Virtú Maragno and Edgar Grana (New York), choral direction with Antonio Russo and Néstor Zadoff, orchestral conducting with Mario Benzecry, singing with Amalia Estévez and José Crea, and piano with Eduardo Páez and Orlando Trípodi.
As choral director, Palmeri has led the Choir of the Faculty of Law (UBA), the Polyphonic Town Choir of Vicente López, Vocal Sospir, the Colegio Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús de Belgrano (College of the Slaves of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Belgrano), the Escuela Argentina Modelo (Argentina Modelo School), the Music School of Buenos Aires, Vocal del Quartier (Paraná) (local singing group of Paraná).
Palmeri has written numerous choral and instrumental works and operas, among which are “Tango del Bicentenario (Bicentenary Tango)“, first performed by the Qatar Symphony Orchestra; “Canto de la lejanía (Song of Distance)“, premiered in 2010 by the Buenos Aires choral society; “Oratorio de Navidad (Christmas Oratorio)“ first performed at the Faculty of Law UBA (2003); “Mateo“, an opera which opened in the Teatro Roma in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires (1999) and was recorded by the State Radio of Bratislava (Slovakia); “Fantasía tanguera (Tango fantasy)“ premiered in Saint Petersburg, Russia (2000); “Presagios (Portents)“, premiered in Matera, Italy, (2001); “Concierto para bandoneón (Accordion concerto)“ in the Teatro Roma in Avellaneda (2004); “Concierto de danzas (Dance concerto)“, “Negro y negro (Black and black)“, “Sobre las cuatro estaciones (On the four seasons)“.
In recent years he has been invited to direct and perform as pianist in the performance of his work “Misatango“, (first performed by the National Sympony Orchestra of Cuba in 1996) in Germany, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Slovakia, Spain, the Netherlands, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Switzerland and the USA.
This work was chosen as part of the workshops for Europa Cantat 2009 (Utrecht, the Netherlands), and has been performed by renowned directors, soloists and orchestras in various cities of the world.
Palmeri was awarded First Prize in the Choral Arrangement Competition organised by AAMCANT in 2011. The National University of Rosario awarded him First Prize in the National Choral Arrangement Competition in 2010.
The National Foundation for the Arts awarded him First Prize in 2003 in the Symphonic Work category of the Juan Carlos Paz Composition Competition for his work “Concierto de danzas para cello y orquesta (Concerto of dances for cello and orchestra)“. Several of his compositions have been recorded on CDs produced in Italy, Latvia and Argentina.
The prestigious Schott Music publishing house in Germany published “Magnificat” in 2015, for choir and orchestra, a work premiered in 2012.
On December 25, the MDR Rundfunkchor and the MDR Sinfonieorchester performed the “Magnificat” in Leipzig, Germany, under the direction of Tobias Volkmann.
In February and September 2017, the Misa a Buenos Aires was presented at the Konzerthaus in the city of Vienna, Austria, within the framework of the Misatango Festival, choirs from all over the world participated.
In April of the same year, the African premiere of Misatango took place in the Moroccan cities of Casablanca and Rabat with the Chorale Polyphonique de Casablanca.
At the end of April 2017, the premiere of the composition “Tango Credo” took place; it was performed at the Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, a concert organized by DCINY.
In September 2018, an important concert was offered with the Misatango at the WDR Auditorium in Koln, Germany with the direction of Mtro. Mariano Chiacchiarini and Victor Villena on bandoneon.
On October 4 2019, the world premiere of the Piano Concerto performed by pianist Antonio Formaro took place at the CCK in Buenos Aires. Pablo Boggiano was in charge of the Juan de Dios Filiberto Orchestra.
In November 2021, the work Cantate Domino premiered in Geneva, Switzerland. This work was commissioned by Choeur Resonances on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
During the year 2021, the 100 years of Astor's birth were celebrated
Piazzolla, for which Mtro. Palmeri has written a work titled La Pasion segun Astor, for choir and orchestra, which premiered in Frankfurt in July 2022, a concert organized by the Goldberg publishing house.
For 2022 he has been invited by the prestigious German publishing house Carus to compose a piece for choir and orchestra to be premiered at the concert for the 50 years of this publishing house. This work titled Nisi Dominus was performed for the first time in the City of Nuremberg within the framework of the ION Festival.
On December 8, the premiere of the Opera “Vera” took place in the city of Foligno, Italy, with a libretto by the poet Francesco Cherubini.
The work “Suite de Rio de la Plata” with text by Alfonsina Storni will premiere in May 2024 in Ticino, Switzerland. Work commissioned by the Calliope Choir and the Sinfonietta Orchestra.
From 6th to 8th June in Frankfurt will be made the video recording and world premier of Judische Kantat, based in old folk Yiddish songs and original music, commissioned because of 10th Anniversary of Goldberg Editions Frankfurt.
The premiere of the Requiem for choir, soloist and symphony orchestra in the Genova opera “Carlo Felice” is scheduled for October 2024. It is a commission by Eurindia Edizioni. Tenor soloist: Marcelo Alvarez, direction: Fernando Alvarez.
