Luca Olzer

I was born in Trento in 1986, surrounded by a family of musicians, woodcutters, and artisans.

I approached the piano at a young age, around six, and in the meantime, I always cultivated a passion for wood, forests, and nature.

After completing scientific high school, I continued my studies in Parma at the "Scuola internazionale di liuteria" (International School of Violin Making) under the guidance of Renato Scrollavezza, Elisa Scrollavezza, and Andrea Zanrè. After my experience in Parma, I returned to Trentino, continuing my training in the field of bowed instrument construction and attending violin making courses with Luca Primon and Dario Michielon.

In my training, I boast collaborations with various colleagues, particularly with Theo Marks (an American luthier by Dutch adoption).

In 2009, I won first prize at the "Concorso Internazionale di liuteria di Pisogne" (International Violin Making Competition of Pisogne) in the free section for young luthiers with a viola.

I participated in the same competition in 2008, in the XVI Triennale International Violin Making Competition of Cremona, achieving a good score, and in the "I suoni del legno" (The Sounds of Wood) competition, where the viola I presented was purchased.

In 2013, I graduated in jazz piano, to which I regularly dedicate myself.

In 2015, the "Istituto Culturale Mocheno" (Mocheno Cultural Institute) commissioned me an ethnomusicological research project on the music in Val dei Mocheni, where I live, through which to build a zero-kilometer violin inspired by artisanal techniques and using raw materials from the territory: from rosin for cooking varnishes to deer tendons for the extraction of collagenous substances to sheep intestines for the winding of strings.

I regularly participate in fairs, and my instruments are played in many orchestras, including the Haydn Orchestra of Trento and Bolzano, the RAI Orchestra of Turin, the Kremerata Baltica, and the Italian Youth Orchestra, among the most well-known. My instruments are also played in many conservatories.
