Roberto Prosseda
Roberto Prosseda is one of the most active and versatile Italian musicians on today’s international scene.
He gained international recognition through his Decca recordings dedicated to the piano works of Felix Mendelssohn, which he recorded in their entirety across ten CDs (2005–2014), later released as a box set in 2017 (Mendelssohn Complete Piano Works). Over the past twenty years, Prosseda has performed regularly with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Moscow State Philharmonic, Orchestra di Santa Cecilia, Filarmonica della Scala, Brussels Philharmonic, Residentie Orkest, Netherlands Symphony, Berliner Symphoniker, Staatskapelle Weimar, Calgary Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. He has collaborated with conductors such as David Afkham, Marc Albrecht, Christian Arming, Harry Bicket, Oleg Caetani, Riccardo Chailly, Pietari Inkinen, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, George Pehlivanian, Dennis Russell Davies, Tugan Sokhiev, Juraj Valčuha, and Jan Willem de Vriend.
With Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester, he recorded Mendelssohn’s previously unpublished Piano Concerto in E minor, released by Decca in September 2009. In Italy he is a regular guest at major concert institutions, including the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Teatro alla Scala, Unione Musicale (Turin), Teatro La Fenice, Accademia Chigiana (Siena), and Teatro Comunale (Bologna).
Prosseda is especially acclaimed for his interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin, composers to whom he has devoted many of his most recent Decca recordings. His cycle of Mozart’s piano sonatas, recorded on a Fazioli piano using Vallotti unequal temperament (6 CDs, Decca, 2015–18), received wide international praise. In 2022, he completed the recording of Mozart’s complete piano works.
Since 2011, Prosseda has also performed on the pedal piano, bringing renewed attention to this rare instrument. He has rediscovered and presented the modern premieres of various works, including pieces by Alkan and Charles Gounod’s Concerto for Pedal Piano and Orchestra, first performed with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini (Parma) and later with the Berliner Symphoniker, Staatskapelle Weimar, Lahti Symphony, and Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. To date, he has given more than 100 concerts and recitals on the pedal piano worldwide.
Prosseda is equally active as a music communicator, designing innovative, internationally recognized concert formats. He conceived and co-authored three television documentaries, directed by Angelo Bozzolini, produced by RAI, and distributed worldwide by EuroArts, dedicated to Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Liszt. For RAI5 he created the lecture-concert series Dentro la Musica, involving some of his best students in episodes devoted to Italian piano music.
His book Il Pianoforte, a listening guide to the piano repertoire, was published by Curci in 2013.
He is artistic director and co-founder of the project Donatori di Musica. Prosseda regularly gives masterclasses at Italian conservatories and international universities, including Yale and UCLA. He is currently director of the Second-Level Master’s program Play & Rec and of the doctoral program in Italian Piano Music at the Conservatorio “Venezze” in Rovigo.
His most recent CD, War Silence (Hyperion, 2025), features four Italian concertos for piano and orchestra, recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Nir Kabaretti.
